AI and Genealogy: What Can It Do to Help US?  (Monthly Educational Meetings)
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Washington DC FamilySearch Center 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington MD 20895 or via Zoom
Ok you’ve heard the hype and the warnings but really what can these AI tools do for you? There are many practical uses of the various AI tools from transcribing handwritten documents, translating into English and summarizing documents into tables, there are a lot of practical uses that can save of a lot of time with our genealogy research. Doug will have practical examples of the best uses of these tools and share some examples of what he has used them to help in his genealogy research. Yes, they can make mistakes but so can we!  A Zoom link will be sent to members a week before the meeting and a reminder the day before via our newsgroup at MontgomeryCountyGenealogy@groups.io.

Doug Hill has been researching his family history for more than 50 years, “mind you not very well as a teen and well before the internet made it a whole lot easier!” he says. Also, it was long before DNA testing and the surprises that can come with test results. He now has almost 4,000 in his ancestry tree and recently made a connection to his 8th great-grandfather, taking him back to Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the late 1600s. He recently moved to Riderwood, a retirement community in Silver Spring. “I am always eager to share knowledge with the genealogy community,” he says. A Zoom link will be sent to members a week before the meeting and a reminder the day before via our newsgroup at MontgomeryCountyGenealogy@groups.io.

Stories of the Real Widows of the Pension Office by Pamela Loos-Noji, PhD  (Monthly Educational Meetings)
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Washington DC FamilySearch Center 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington MD 20895 or via Zoom

The stories of several women who were granted (or not) Civil War widow's pensions highlight the problems women faced in the 19th and early 20th century in America. Some of the stories are shocking, some sad, some heartfelt. Each brings to life a real person and her struggles.

Pamela Loos-Noji, PhD, has been a staff genealogist at NSDAR for 14 years. She started genealogical research in 2006 after her father’s death when she inherited the family “boxes.” Her specialties include research in New England, Civil War widow’s pensions, and records of the Japanese-American internment. She has worked, volunteered, and lectured locally and at national conferences.
