7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Washington DC FamilySearch Center, 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington MD 20895 and via Zoom

Join fellow members of MoCoGenSoc to learn about a new partnership between the Montgomery County Genealogical Society (Maryland) and the Rockville Cemetery Association to research the history of notable and everyday Rockville families who made contributions to the history of Montgomery County, Maryland through their lives and businesses. We'll be researching the history of people who are interred at Rockville Cemetery, which has been in continuous operation since 1742.

Hear about progress on the first biographies produced as part of the project, and learn how you can become involved in documenting the history of some of Montgomery County's community members.

Hannelore Quigley is a sixth generation Rockville resident, and President of the Rockville Cemetery Association. She is on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Genealogical Association, and volunteers extensively with non-profit historical associations in Montgomery County to help people get interested in Rockville history. She joins Patty Hankins and Cristina Lyons from the Montgomery County Genealogical Society Board of Directors to present current research on some familiar and not so familiar names from Rockville history.

Indirectly Evident: Finding William's Parents by Debbie Wilson Smyth  (Monthly Educational Meetings)
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Washington DC FamilySearch Center, 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington MD 20895 and via Zoom
Challenges arise in identifying parental relationships when the time period lacks traditional birth and death records. Research is further complicated by early marriage records that did not name parents and early census records that did not state relationships. A genealogist must rely on the analysis and correlation of many sources to reach a conclusion. This presentation will explore a case study using indirect evidence to arrive at a conclusion for the parents of William Graham of Meigs County, Ohio.

Debbie Wilson Smyth has been researching her family since 1993 and holds a Certificate in the Genealogical Research program from Boston University. As the owner of Oak Trails Genealogy Services, LLC, she provides professional genealogical services in research, education, consultation, and speaking. Her research focuses on midwestern and southern states, methodology, lineage society applications, and DNA. Debbie is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Genealogy Speakers Guild, as well as a number of national, state, and local societies.

Approximately one-third of the people living in the Colonies at the time of the Revolution were loyal to the King. During the War, some fought in Loyalist units. By the end of the war, most were forced to leave, either north to Canada or back across the ocean. Many filed claims with the British government for failing to protect them from the rebels. Learn about the records of their service and the records of their time after the War.

Migrating ancestors can be difficult to follow as they move from place to place. Three case studies will show techniques and records you can use to make it easier to follow their paths. The case studies involve a colonial migration from Pennsylvania to Virginia, a move from Vermont to New York to Illinois in the early 19th century, and a move from Illinois to Nebraska to homestead in the later 19th century. Learn methods and sources that will help you follow your ancestors wherever and whenever they moved.

They Will Not Be Forgotten, One Family’s Stories of Military Service from Independence to Vietnam  (Monthly Educational Meetings)
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Via Zoom
Armand Kinslow will discuss his book They Will Not Be Forgotten, One Family’s Stories of Military Service from Independence to Vietnam.  They Will Not Be Forgotten presents a fascinating collection of inspirational wartime stories, from the perspective of veterans, from our Nation's Independence through Vietnam.

It began like the genealogical research of so many families, to learn more about the relatives who came before them.  It led to the surprising discovery of stories from family members spanning eight generations, each serving in the conflicts of their era, from the War of Independence through Vietnam.

Armand Kinslow joined the USMC as an infantry officer.  He later served as an intelligence officer during the Cold War, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Between his military and government service, Kinslow spent four decades working in intelligence gathering and analysis.  He is an avid history buff, particularly of America's military campaigns.
